摘要:
A common theme in number theory, used in work on many important problems such as Fermat's Last Theorem and the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, is to use sequences of carefully selected auxiliary prime numbers to gradually simplify the problem. I will describe a beautiful idea introduced by Scholze, and developed further by Sweeting, using ultrafilters – a tool from set theory – to interpret these sequences as tending to a limit in a suitable space of "ultraprimes". I will explain recent work with Sarah Zerbes in which we use these ultraprimes to make new progress in the Iwasawa theory of modular forms.

David Loeffler 是瑞士远程大学的教授,同时也是瑞士苏黎世联邦理工学院的客座教授。他于2025年当选为欧洲科学院院士,并曾受邀在2022年国际数学家大会(ICM 2022)作报告;此外,他还曾于2015年获得伦敦数学会(LMS)颁发的Whitehead奖,于2014年获得Philip Leverhulme奖。
